Project Summary
The new 119,000 SF College of Education Building will not only provide ODU with a state-of-the-art teaching facility but emphasize ODU's reputation of graduating more teachers than any other institute in the Commonwealth.
This five story, LEED Silver Certified building includes large multi-purpose auditorium, 11 classrooms with capacity to hold up to 500 students, 151 faculty offices, LEED Silver Certified facility which is a Student-focused Career and Advising Resource Center, nine laboratories for science, technology education, mathematics and industrial technology.
GET Solutions, Inc. provided a test pile program, production pile monitoring, vibration monitoring as well as concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel, seismic and main wind forces resisting systems, and fireproofing inspections. Square, precast, prestressed, concrete piles were installed to support the building’s frame. This program consisted of the dynamic evaluation of selected piles with a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA).This electronic device records driving stresses and pile/soil interactions.
Due to the large amount of energy required to install the driven deep foundations for the building, vibrations of considerable magnitude were generated. Since these vibrations could have affected the nearby campus structures, GET developed and implemented a pile vibration monitoring program to observe the vibrations (peak particle velocities, frequency and durations) immediately adjacent to the closest structures. GET monitored vibrations not only during pile installation but also during the entirety of the building construction.
